Turnbuckles are measured according to their “take-up” amount. The take-up is the total adjustment length available inside the body (the center section of the turnbuckle). In this case, the turnbuckle has 4" of take-up. That means if the end fittings are threaded all the way out, they can be adjusted back in a total of 4" combined — for example, 2" on each side until the threaded ends meet near the center of the body.
