There isn’t a fixed or mandated lifespan for a vertical rope lifeline unless the manufacturer specifically states one. Instead, service life is determined by proper inspection and condition over time. Lifelines must be inspected before each use, with more formal documented inspections performed either quarterly, semi-annually, or annually depending on usage and environment (light maintenance vs. heavy construction or oil & gas). Ultimately, the rope remains in service as long as it continues to pass inspection and meets current safety standards.
A lifeline should be removed from service if:
- It fails a visual or physical inspection (cuts, abrasion, glazing, etc.)
- It no longer complies with OSHA or ANSI requirements
- There is a manufacturer recall or stop-use notice
- The manufacturer specifies an expiration or service life that has been reached
This approach ensures safety without relying on an arbitrary expiration date.
