The 3/8" chain is about 1.36" wide (outside, overall width) without the chafe sleeve. With the chafe sleeve, you'd want to allow approximately another 1/8" of clearance minimum. It depends on just how tight you plan to pinch down the chafe sleeve, or if it's bunched, and if you want to massage it into place, or if you want plenty of clearance, etc.
